Marinus Henry Latour, 92, died Friday, June 25, 2010 at Arbor Oaks in Greenacres, FL where he had been living the last 2 years. He was born on August 5, 1917 in Stuart, FL and was raised in Miami Beach. He was a resident of Gainesville for over 60 years.
On Oct. 19, 1999 he was preceded in death by his sweetheart, Peggy J. Saunders, whom he married on November 2, 1941 at Miami Beach Community Church.
He received his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1940 and Master of Science in Engineering in 1949 at the University of Florida.
He served in World War II as a civilian instructor in the 4th Corps Area Signal Electronics School at Camp Blanding and as a Radio Engineer at the 6th Service Command Headquarters.
After the war he joined faculty of Electrical Engineering Dept., Univ. of Florida, from 1946 until he retired in 1984 as an Associate Professor, Emeritus and worked part-time as an Aero-Space Technologist at the Kennedy Space Center during the summers from 1961 - 1977.
His numerous accomplishment and civic duties include: Past President & member of Florida Historical Society; Past President Director & member of Alachua County Historical Society; Past President & member of Matheson Historical Center, Inc; Member of : Orange County Historical Society, Athenaeum Club, University of Florida, Historic Gainesville, Inc., Historic Melrose, Inc., National Trust Historical Preservation, Florida Trust Historical Preservation.
He and Peggy were very active members of First Presbyertian Church of Gainesville.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Chapel In The Meadows, 4100 NW 39th Ave. A funeral service will be held at the Chapel In The Meadows on Satruday, July 3, at 12:00 noon, with Reverend Larry Hendon, Associate Pastor at First Presbyerian Church officiating. He will be buried next to his sweetheart at Forest Meadows Memorial Park Central.
